Best Counter-Depth Refrigerators of 2022

These refrigerators cost much less than built-in appliances and sit almost flush with kitchen cabinets

By Daniel Wrocławski

Refrigerators have gotten much bigger in recent years. This is great if you need to store food for a large family, but not so great for your floor plan, especially in small kitchens.

“The deepest refrigerator we tested is 37 inches deep,” says Larry Ciufo, chief refrigerator test engineer at CR. “That means it’s 12 inches longer than a standard 25-inch-deep countertop.” Kitchen cabinets are typically 24 inches deep, plus a 1-inch overhang for the counter.

But there are less obtrusive refrigerators: counter-depth models. They don’t flush with kitchen counters like built-in refrigerators do, but they cost thousands less and fit much closer than standard-depth refrigerators. With a depth of less than 30 inches (and some up to 24 inches), most counter-depth models protrude only a few inches from the counter, but sometimes just the thickness of the door.

During testing, we fit each refrigerator with temperature sensors in a climate-controlled chamber and monitor it for a month, collecting over 5.4 million temperature readings that identify hot and cold spots, to determine which models will preserve food. costs longer. We also consider survey data from tens of thousands of CR members to judge brand trustworthiness and satisfaction. All of this data, and more, informs CR’s refrigerator rating charts and each model’s overall rating.
