Famous TV chef opens new Hong Kong street restaurant in Lanarkshire

Celebrity chef Jimmy Lee is expanding his Hong Kong Street Food brand, Salt and Chilli Oriental, with the opening of a new location in Hamilton.

A mix of East and West, old and new and salt and chilli, the new takeaway venture offers a taste of Hong Kong’s no-frills street food.

Salt and Chilli Oriental Hamilton is the third Scottish establishment of the award-winning chef’s growing brand, following Salt and Chilli in Glasgow’s West End and Salt and Chilli Edinburgh in Bonnie and Wild Marketplace in St James Quarter.

It serves Cantonese street food that has been revamped, remastered and revisited, as well as comforting Chinese classics and fusion concoctions that combine traditional Hong Kong street food with a heavy dose of modern Scottish attitude.

The business, which opens today (Tuesday) at 17 Gateside Street, in the former location of Peter’s Restaurant, is also a homecoming for Hamilton-born Jimmy.

He told Lanarkshire Live: “Hamilton is my home town; I was born and raised here, attended St Johns Primary and Hamilton Grammar School so it’s very special for me to open my third location there.

“Our menu features delicious Hong Kong-style street snacks as well as comforting British and Cantonese cuisines that we all love and adore.”

Jimmy, who owns one of Glasgow’s most famous Cantonese restaurants, Lychee Oriental, is also a budding media personality and has appeared on the BBC’s Great British Menu, as a judge alongside Prue Leith on My Kitchen Rules from Channel 4 and with Kirstie Allsopp on Kirstie’s Handmade. Noël as well as the presentation of her popular STV cooking series, Julie and Jimmy’s Hot Woks.

Spicy Peking-style ribs and chicken satay with spicy bao-stuffed chicken katsu dip or aromatic pulled duck as well as the signature “salt and chili menu” with options of chicken, king prawns, crab, calamari or salt and chili tofu – all served with Yutaka Salad. The oriental salt and chilli menu will be warm and hearty Cantonese with ‘small bites’ available for £5 and ‘big bites’ including the Katsu Chicken Curry and Macau Beef Curry.
