Fremantle raises the stakes with an influx of new factual programming
Ahead of MIPCOM, Fremantle revealed a slew of factual headlines that will hit the international market this fall. This follows the global production and distribution giant’s pledge to expand its factual roster by adding more high-end documentaries and hard-hitting series of global reach to its catalog.
The latest factual programming includes the gripping Hulu docuseries, The curse of Von Dutch, which chronic the astonishing story of kidnappings, beatings in the back, extortion and violence behind the cult fashion brand that embodied the birth of the internet age and celebrity culture. Viewers can expect an extraordinary glimpse into the culture of the late 90s and early 2000s, with fascinating contributions from drug-pushing gangsters and surfers from Venice Beach, to Hollywood figures like Paris Hilton and Dennis Rodman. The curse of Von Dutch,(3 x 60 ‘), is produced by IPC for Hulu and will reach American audiences on November 18.
Producers of Hostile planet, Malika the lion queen and Night on earth and comes Patagonia: life at the end of the world. This pioneering new environmental documentary series sets out to explore and document one of the most unexplored, spectacular and fragile regions on Earth in all its wild splendor. Ultra High Definition (UHD) cameras and the most advanced technology are used to capture beautifully composed “blue chip” cutscenes of the last frontier on earth. Patagonia: life at the end of the worldis a six-part series produced by Plimsoll Productions for CNN and is produced by Martha Holmes (Blue Planet, Life).
Series full of action and adrenaline, The last of the giants, sees adventurer Cyril Chauquet and his trusted and expert crew brave the ultimate survival test; the Far North of the Americas and the Amazon rainforest. The team is looking for some of the most endangered freshwater goliaths on the planet, including the armored white sturgeon, the prehistoric Pirarucu and the towering Piraiba. After years of habitat destruction, pollution and commercial pressure, the team is collecting vital specimens that could save these species from extinction. The last of the giants (8 x 60 ‘) premiered on Evasion earlier this month and is produced by Untamed Productions. The series hits the Discovery Channel in Canada later this year and Season 2 is currently in production.
Coming to Channel 4 is Louise Woodward: villain or victim? which provides new insight into the controversial case of the 19-year-old British nanny, who was charged with the murder of eight-month-old Matthew Eappen in Massachusetts. Produced by UK label Naked de Fremantle, the three-part series will tell the definitive version of Louise’s story offering in-depth research, expert documentary filmmaking and exclusive access to compelling contributors with key roles in the case.
After the success of the first series, award-winning wildlife expert Steve Backshall is back for more adventures in remote corners of the planet. Series 2 Expedition sees Steve embark on new missions to uncover new ideas that could help secure a future for the world’s wildlife. Some jaw-dropping world premieres include paddling the uncharted waters of the Kronotsky River in the far east of Russia and exploring the longest lava tube in the ancient desert kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This second series (6 x 60 ‘) is produced by True to Nature Productions for UKTV and will launch in November on Dave, in addition to the on-demand service UKTV Play.
