Michiganders urged to check air conditioners ahead of summer heat

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – As temperatures warm outside, many people are turning up their air conditioning.

Before you do that, the experts said you want to make sure it’s working properly. Keeping an air conditioning unit under control makes a big difference.

“If you have a central air system, that means you use your furnace fan year-round,” Mark Kelly said. “That means you have to keep changing your furnace fan all year round.”

Kelly, owner of Happy Homes Heating and Air Conditioningsaid that if you allow a filter to clog, it puts extra strain on the system.

Beyond the summer heat, Kelly said he’s never seen backup gear like there is now in his 20 years of service. Supply chain issues delay equipment by 3-8 weeks on average. Because of the backup, if your air conditioner needs fixing, you’ll want to pick up the phone fast.

“The quote can only last 30 days now because the prices are skyrocketing,” Kelly said.

If you’re waiting for a repairman, Kelly said there’s something you can do yourself to keep your air conditioner working properly.

“Coming out and looking, you’re going to have some kind of box outside your house, look at the coils on it, and if they’re just covered in dirt and debris, maybe hit them with the hose pipe. ‘watering,’ Kelly says.

If your system is more than 15 years old, professionals recommend changing it before it’s too late.

Another reason to have your appliances checked is if you notice an increase in your electric bill or if your air conditioner is getting louder.
