State Senator Royce West and Whirlpool Corp. are collaborating to bring “Feel Good Fridges” to Dallas in conjunction with local community organizations. Through donations of refurbished “community refrigerators” by Whirlpool Corp., in conjunction with the North Texas Food Bank, refrigerators will be stocked with nutritious foods to make healthy meal options more accessible to anyone in need.
The program launched in southwest Michigan in 2021 with Whirlpool Corp. placing refrigerators in areas near its headquarters in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Then it was Atlanta, and now Dallas. Future community refrigerators will be placed in other major urban centers across the United States, including Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.
The pandemic has given us all a glimpse of what it’s like when the necessities of life are not at hand. Now imagine what it’s like for those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Senator West. “I commend Whirlpool Corporation for its initiative to address hunger and food insecurity nationwide, and for bringing this program to Dallas. I hope others will follow their example.
With a focus on Black, Indigenous Peoples of Color (BIPOC) and also targeting rural areas, Whirlpool Corp. partnered with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, and its network of food banks to address food insecurity in underserved areas. communities across the country. Refrigerators are planned for several locations in the state of Texas and locally, in cooperation with organizations that have programs designed to close the hunger gap:
“Food inequality is a serious issue in the United States, and that’s why we’re excited to see this program continue to grow and expand to other cities across the country,” said Gerrod Moore, director of product marketing for Whirlpool Corp.
“We have already placed 70 refrigerators across the country and plan to place another 200 before the end of the year.” In addition to these refurbished refrigerators placed under Whirlpool Corp.’s Second Channel Sales Program, which takes used appliances and gives them a second life, the Maytag brand is also placing refrigerators in Boys and Girls Clubs in across the country.
