The Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) has called on electricity consumers in the state to run their air conditioners at 24°C to ensure optimum energy consumption and also to extend the life of the device.

Managing Director of APSECM and Executive Director of AP Transco, A. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, said in a statement that energy efficiency measures must be embraced by all given the prevailing electricity shortage in the country and in the state as well as increased AC usage due to hot weather.

“APSECM recommends that all electricity consumers in the State set their air conditioning to 24°C by default, which is good for people’s health as well as their budget. According to experts, dropping the temperature below 24°C shortens the life of the air conditioner, increases the monthly electricity bill and also harms health. According to scientific data, you can save about 6% electricity by increasing the room temperature by 1°C,” he said.

APSECM also offered suggestions on the effective use of CAs. These include keeping the sun out by using blinds, curtains or drapes, making sure the home is well insulated, and cleaning and replacing air conditioner air filters once every 30 to 90 days.
